"5-axis CNC-milling" with 3-axis milling
machine by means of
- manual rotary table and with
- horizontal positioning of spindlemotor

- without moving the model material.
The example to the right has been made by means of
the CAM-software "DeskProto" and a 3-axis CNC-
milling machine of the "AutoGrav" type.

1.  Secure the pivot of the rotary table to
the middle of the milling machine table.
Position and clamp the rotary table by
means of "LB-mini-clamps", so that the
     0-180 axes are approximately parallel
to the X-axis of the milling machine.
     (See photo 2)

2.  Mount the Holding Device for horizontal
positioning of the spindlemotor on the
     alu-profile of the Z-axis.
Secure the
     spindlemotor. (See photo 3)

3.  Load the file for the first side milling. Perform Reference-run and
move the cutter manually to the centre of the rotary table.

Note the centre co-ordinates Xc and Yc.

 Yc=

Continue the manual run to the periphery of the rotary table at the zero
degree point. Note the Xo and Yo co-ordinates. Finish with
     Reference-run.

4.  Mount the model material to the rotary table with double adhesive tape,
so that the down side of the model is elevated approx. 50 mm above
the top of the rotary table. (See photo 4)

5.  Move the cutter manually to the desired starting point.
     Note the starting point co-ordinates X1, Y1 and Z1.

Save - and start the first side milling.

After milling: Reference-run.

6.  Load the file for the second side milling.  Turn the rotary table 180 degrees. The exact position is
determined by moving the cutter manually to the co-ordinates Xo and Yo mentioned in point 3.

Clamp the rotary table.

7.  Calculate the new starting point for the second side milling, as shown
below. Move manually to the new starting point. Save - and start the
     second side milling.
            X2 = 2 * Xc - DPx*) -X1
            Y2 = 2 * Yc - DPy*) -Y1

*): DPx and DPy are taken from DeskProto's Geometry-information: DPx= the x-value, DPy= the z-value.

8.  Load the file for top milling. Mount the spindlemotor in vertical position and perform the top milling
     in the usual way.

To generate the toolpaths of the side milling, the following changes are to be made in the DeskProto set-up.
Postprocessor: (under Movement)
       Start-commands: X Y Z A are changed to X Z Y A
       Factor: 1,00  1,00  1,00  1,00 are changed to 1,00  -1,00  -1,00  1,00
Order: XYZ(A) are changed to XZY(A)
Machine set-up:
Working Area for Z is increased to a value that corresponds to the milling machine's Y-value.
